We will be holding parent reading mornings which will take place on Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8.30-8.45. During this time, we welcome you in to read a story with your child.
PE will be taking place on Mondays. Please send PE kit into school, labelled with your child’s name and also in a labelled PE bag.
This half term, our topic is called
Where in the World
The children will reflect on photographs and experiences of their local area and how it has changed over time (homes, transport etc). The children will go on a walk around the local area and use their knowledge to make maps of the places in Birmingham that are important to them. The map will also reflect their journey to school, and may reflect upon their experiences.
The children will find out about where members of their families are from and we will learn about how life is different in these places of the world. For this aspect, we will be focusing on the books ‘Handa’s Surprise’ which focuses on Kenya, Africa. The next book focus is ‘Lost and Found’ which focuses on the penguin in the South Pole. Members of the community from places around the world will be invited to come and tell stories of what life was like when they were young living abroad.
Phonics
At Conway Primary School, we teach phonics using the Read Write Inc scheme. The children are taught in small groups which focus on the specific sounds or areas of phonics that they are currently learning.
Reading
Reading is especially important in Reception as we are laying the foundations to create a love of reading. We are developing the children’s understanding of questions, the story and their vocabulary through story discussion. We are currently learning the initial sounds. We are supporting children to read CVC words.
Please read at home and make a comment or add a smiley face, with the name of the book so we can see that your child has read at home.
Handwriting
In reception, we start teaching the children how to write in cursive. Please use the website and examples below, to help develop your child’s cursive handwriting.
